What the Heck is Vaginismus
posted @ 12:30 pm in [ Womans health ]

It may have a strange name, but vaginismus is no laughing matter for millions of women. This sexual problem can destroy relationships and self esteem, and so many women suffer in silence because they do not understand they have a legitimate medical problem or they are too embarrassed to speak up and ask for help. The good news is that vaginismus can be easily treated – learning more about this often ignored condition could literally change lives for millions of women.
First, what is vaginismus? Vaginismus is a condition in which the pelvic floor muscles around the vagina tighten to the extent that sex is troublesome or altogether impossible. The tightening of the muscles happens involuntarily – in most cases, the woman does not even know it is happening. Sometimes, muscles spasms, in addition to the tightening of the muscles, also occur.
There are two types of vaginismus – primary and secondary. Women with primary vaginismus have never been able to have sexual intercourse, and also usually not able to use a tampon or have a pelvic exam. Women with secondary vaginismus have had sexual intercourse without problems in the past, but suddenly find themselves unable to complete intercourse.
Vaginismus can present itself in a number of different ways. Sometimes, sexual intercourse is painful – either sex burns or stings for the woman, or the man feel that the vagina is too tight for his penis. In other instances, sex may be impossible – the pelvic floor muscles tighten to the extent that the man cannot insert his penis at all. Another symptom of vaginismus is spasm in the back muscles spasms during otherwise comfortable sexual encounters.
The symptoms may also be psychological. If you tend to avoid sex because it has been painful in the past, then vaginismus might be to blame. Likewise, women who have experienced rape or that were sexually molested as children often experience periods of vaginimus.
After experiencing these kinds of problems with one sexual partner, the problem of vaginismus tends to multiply itself. Women often then avoid relationships for fear of dealing with this problem, or they commit themselves to relationships they cannot consummate because they don’t want to face sexual intercourse. It doesn’t have to be this way, however.
The first step in treating vaginismus is to know that you are not alone. Millions of women experience this, in all stages of life. There are marriages that have never been consummated for this reason. Just because a woman is in a relationship doesn’t mean that they do not have this problem. If you are in a relationship, it is crucial to have a supportive partner as you embark upon treatment. If you are not in a relationship, you can still start treatment on your own, so you will feel more confident about your future relationships.
Treatment comes in a series of steps. The first steps involve dealing with any psychological issues that might be causing your physical reactions to sexual intercourse, so you can learn to come to terms with your sexuality and yourself as a sexual being. Once you have become comfortable with the idea of wanting to be sexually active, then you can begin a series of so called “insertion” treatments, to help you learn to control your pelvic floor muscles.
These steps walk you through becoming comfortable with inserting small items, like cotton buds, into your vagina, and building up until you can use vaginal dilators with ease. Through these exercises, you will learn to recognize the sign of your muscles tightening and how to ease this tightening on your own. After completing these steps, you can practice this same control of your muscles during sexual intercourse with a trusted and supportive partner, solving your vaginismus problem once and for all.

URINARY TRACT INFECTION
posted @ 6:13 pm in [ Womans health ]

URINARY TRACT INFECTION
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common – particularly in women, babies and the elderly. Around one in two women and one in 20 men will get a UTI in their lifetime.
If you feel like you need to pass urine urgently as well as frequently but the flow is small and you also feel a burning sensation you probably have urinary tract infection. Your urine can be  cloudy and smelly as well.

What is a Urinary Tract Infection?
A UTI is an infection anywhere in the urinary tract. The urinary tract makes and stores urine and removes wastes from the body. Parts of the urinary tract include:

  • Kidneys—collect waste from blood to make urine
  • Urethres —carry the urine from the kidneys to the bladder
  • Bladder—stores urine until it is full
  • Urethra —a short tube that carries urine from the bladder out of your body when you pass urine

If infection reaches the kidneys, prompt medical attention is needed. If treated right away, a UTI is not likely to damage your kidneys or urinary tract. But UTIs that are not treated can cause serious problems in your kidneys and the rest of your body. Therefore it is important to contain UTI as soon as symptoms appear to avoid developing serious complications.

How do I know if I have urinary tract infection?
To find out if you have a urinary tract infection, your doctor will need to test a clean sample of your urine. The doctor will give you a clean plastic container and a special wipe. Wash your hands before opening the container. When you open it, don’t touch the inside of the lid or inside of the container. Put the container in easy reach. Separate the labia, the outer lips of the vagina, with one hand. With your other hand, clean the genital area with the wipe. Wipe from front to back. Do not touch or wipe the anus. While still holding the labia open, pass a little bit of urine into the toilet. Then, catch the rest in the container. This is called a “clean-catch” sample. Let the rest of the urine fall into the toilet.
If your family doctor thinks you have a urinary tract infection, he will probably prescribe an antibiotic for you. Usually, symptoms of the infection go away within 1 to 2 days after you start taking the medicine. Even if you are feeling better, make sure you take all the medicine,

Your doctor may also suggest a medicine to numb your urinary tract and make you feel better while the antibiotic starts to work. The medicine makes your urine turn bright orange, so don’t be alarmed by the colour when you urinate.
Why do women get urinary tract infections more often than men?
Women tend to get urinary tract infections more often than men because bacteria can reach the bladder more easily in women. The urethra is shorter in women than in men, so bacteria have a shorter distance to travel.

The urethra is also located near the rectum in women. Bacteria from the rectum can easily travel up the urethra and cause infections. Having sex may also cause urinary tract infections in women because bacteria can be pushed into the urethra.
What causes urinary tract infection?
Micro-organisms are the cause. Urine is normally sterile, which means it doesn’t contain any bacteria, fungus or viruses. To infect the urinary system, a micro-organism usually has to enter through the urethra. The most common culprit is a bacterium common to the digestive tract called E-coli. It is usually spread to the urethra from the anus.

Other micro-organisms, such as Mycoplasma and Chlamydia, can cause urethritis in some women and sometimes men. These micro-organisms are sexually transmitted so, when these infections are detected, both partners need medical treatment to avoid re-infection.

Controlled trials have shown that cranberry juice may decrease the number of women with symptoms over a 12-month period. Cranberry juice appears to lower the ability of E. coli to stick to the urinary tract lining cells. Cranberry products can also be effective in reducing the risk of UTIs in women who have had recurrent infections. Let your doctor know if you are having cranberry juice as it can alter the effectiveness of some antibiotics.

How can women prevent urinary tract infection?
Here are some suggestions many women have found helpful in reducing the risk of developing urinary tract infections:

  • Drink plenty of water (six to eight glasses per day). This flushes the urinary system. Also have a glass or water before and after sex.
  • Urinate when you need to. Don’t hold it. Pass urine before and after sex. After you pass urine or have a bowel movement, wipe from front to back.
  • If you get a lot of UTIs and use spermicidal cream,  talk to your doctor about using other forms of birth control.
  • Don’t use douches or feminine hygiene sprays.
  • Take showers instead of baths.
  • Wear underpants with a cotton crotch. Don’t wear tight-fitting pants, which can trap in moisture where bacteria like to breed.

Will I get repeat infections?

About one in five women who get UTIs will get another one. Some women get three or more UTIs a year. If you are prone to UTIs, ask your doctor about your treatment options. Your doctor may ask you to take a small dose of medicine every day to prevent infection or your doctor might give you a supply of antibiotics to take after sex or at the first sign of infection. “Dipsticks” can help test for UTIs at home. They are useful for some women with repeat UTIs. Ask your doctor if you should use dipsticks at home to test for UTI. Your doctor may also want to do special tests to see what is causing repeat infections. Ask about them.

Things to remember:
1.   Drink plenty of water every day.
2.   Treat any infections immediately
3.   Have good personal hygiene.

What every woman needs to know about urinary tract infection
posted @ 7:13 am in [ Womans health ]

Urinary tract infections or also often called UTIs are a more serious problem then most women might think. As a matter of fact, UTIs are a serious health problem and millions of people are affected each year. This infection is the second most common infection in the human body and women are in general more prone for UTIs than men. Twenty percent of women develop a UTI during their lifetime. Urinary tract infections cause a burning sensation when urinating and is very uncomfortable. You  need to be attended to this  immediately.
Within the urinary system, the kidneys and bladder are an important component in human health. The kidneys remove excess liquid and other wastes from the blood and transform it into urine. This keeps a stable balance of salts and minerals in the blood. The kidneys also produce a hormone that is part of the formation of red blood cells. Channels between the kidney and the bladder as well as to the outside transport these waste products out of the human body.
In general, urine is sterile and causes no infections, but sometimes there are bacteria that get into the urinary tract system and there they can multiply rapidly. When bacteria multiply, an infection can occur. The infection can start in any of the different parts of the urinary system. An infection in the bladder is called bladder infection or cystitis.
In general, the urinary system is designed in such a way to fight or prevent the more severe infections. The ureter and bladder prevent urine from backing up into the kidneys and the urine flow from the bladder remove bacteria from the body. But despite the good design, infections can still occur.
Women should know that if they had three urinary tract infections, they are likely to have more and 90 percent of  women get another one within 18 months. Should you have frequent urinary tract infections, you can ask your physician for low dosage antibiotics that can be taken up to half a year at a time. You can also take a single dose of antibiotic after intercourse or take a short amount of antibiotics when symptoms occur, but only after talking to your physician about it.
To prevent running to your physician’s office or just to have confirmation, there are dipstick available over the counter now. These dipsticks detect 90 percent of all urinary tract infections when used with the first urine sample after waking up. Steps to prevent further UTIs or to reduce the risk of having another one within a short amount of time are also useful for woman. Such steps include drinking large amounts of water every day, urinate whenever you have the urge and do not hold it in for long periods of time. Always wipe from front to back after using the toilet. This prevents bacteria from the anus area  entering the vaginal area and therefore the urinary tract system.
It is also recommended to shower instead of taking tub baths. Water in the tub stays to long around your urinary system and therefore can spread easily. Another very important step is to cleanse the genital area before you have intercourse. This reduces the amount of bacteria entering your system.
Soaps and douches as well as other feminine hygiene products can irritate the urethra area and should therefore also be avoided or reduced.
For women it is also important to know that UTIs in pregnant women need to be treated instantly. Urinary Tract infections in pregnant women can lead to premature delivery of the baby and also high blood pressure. Since not all antibiotics are safe to be used during pregnancy, the treatment is a little harder than for a regular UTI.

Breast Cancer Risks
posted @ 7:16 am in [ Breast cancer ]

Breast cancer is a real risk for any woman and especially for women where breast cancer runs in the family. You, as a woman need to learn as much as you can about a health risk factors related to breast cancer. Of course, the exact causes of breast cancer or any other cancer is not exactly known, but there are risk factors that can lead to a higher probability for a woman to get breast cancer. One thing that is for certain–breast cancer is not contagious. You cannot get cancer from a cancer patient and breast cancer is not caused through touching or bruising of the breasts.

Here are a few risks of breast cancer that women should know about.

Age is one of the risk factors.  Most breast cancer is detected in women over 60, although women of any age can be diagnosed with breast cancer so it is very important to self examine on a regular basis.

Family history is one of the bigger ones on the list. If the mother or sister, or even daughter of a woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it is more likely that the woman will also develop breast cancer, especially if the family member had breast cancer before she turned 40 years old. Also, other relatives can also increase the likeliness of breast cancer, such as women in the father’s side of the family.

If your breast develops a certain set of abnormal cells, you are more likely to have breast cancer. These cells are not cancerous yet, but these changes to the breasts can be indicators of breast cancer. Once again early intervention is very important for any woman, so also investigate any changes to your breast.

Also, if you have cancer in one breast you are more likely to develop cancer in your other breast. This, as well as certain changes in genes, can cause breast cancer that is related to your own family history.
Some studies have shown that some aspects of reproduction are connected to a heightened risk of breast cancer. For example, if a woman is older when she gives birth to her first child, or a woman has had her first period before age 12, or a woman who never has had any children and other such facts are connected to a higher risk for breast cancer. On the other hand, studies have shown women who have had a miscarriage or an abortion have not increased the risk factor, contrary to popular belief.

Also a factor for breast cancer is your race. More white women have been diagnosed with breast cancer than African America, Latin American or Asian women.

Something to think about for many of women is the fact that women who are obese during and after their menopause are at a higher risk of getting breast cancer. Some studies connected health and lifestyle related issues to breast cancer. For example, a woman that did not work out throughout her life is at higher risk for breast cancer than a woman that stayed fit. The more alcohol a woman drinks, the greater seems to be her risk of breast cancer.

Don’t panic just because you or your family fit into one of these risk categories. Being at a heighten risk does not necessarily mean that you will get breast cancer. Many studies are still being worked on and some studies might even give a different opinion about some of the risk factors mentioned above.
As a responsible woman you need to do regular self examinations and if you are in the high risk area you need to have regular check-ups and of course regular mammograms.

The other important aspect is for you to keep yourself  healthy by keeping your stress levels down, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. To find out more secrets to being fit and healthy check out the secrets in the book.

Healthy Woman Secret 1:

LEARN TO CONTROL STRESS:
No matter how good our relationship is, many women bear the bulk of the responsibility for running the household – and no wonder!! We have been blessed with the ability to multi-task where as “they” can only manage one thing at a time. Sound familiar!! So no wonder our stress levels are huge. As most of us are holding down a job as well. Managing stress is so important for us to operate efficently and to remain healthy.
Stress is the major cause of such health problems as heart disease, depression, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue syndrome, anxiety attacks, mood swings, sleep problems, ulcers, colds, flu, headaches, migraines and many more.

Here is the first tip to manage stress:

Meditate everyday for at least 15 minutes. I have no time I hear you say. Just make time!

Here’s how to begin.

Lie on your back, palms up or sit in a comfortable position.Take a deep breath in. Expand the belly. Breath out slowly from the top of the lungs and push the air out. Continue to do this until you get a gentle rhythm. Now relax the back of the scalp and the muscles around the face.Relax each part of your body step by step, shoulders, arms, back, abdomon, buttocks, legs, feet and toes.Feel your muscles going loose and relaxing. Keep breathing deeply. Once you have relaxed, concerntrate on your breathing and imagine a beautiful scene – lying on the beach with a gentle breeze blowing or imagine a white fluffly cloud and you are gradually sinking down. Now comes the important part – try to clear your mind of all thoughts and concerntrate on your breathing. As soon as a thought pops into your head, dismiss it and imagine your mind is blank. I imagine my mind as a blank piece of white paper and if a thought comes in I wipe it off immedialtely. This takes a lot of practice but if you can still your mind and get rid of the constant chatter you will gain more clarity and become more relaxed. At the end of the meditation session you will feel great.

One of the main healthy womans secrets is to reduce stress. More tips later.

Anyone who has some good stress busting tips please leave a comment.
